Adapted from the prizewinning novel by Sarah Waters (TIPPING THE VELVET, SLGFF 2002), THE NIGHT WATCH is a hauntingly beautiful exploration of secrets, scandals, and the time-spanning connections between them. Beginning in 1947 postwar London, the film drifts backward in time as memories are unfurled and connections are revealed between a gay man, his straight sister, and three lesbians whose paths have crossed in love and war. Directed by openly gay Richard Laxton (AN ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK, SLGFF 2009), this richly layered meditation on chance and circumstance features riveting performances amid a dark and sensual atmosphere, leading to a surprising conclusion.
