The New Black
directed by Yoruba Richen
Winner of the 2013 Audience Award at AFI Docs, this film is a frank analysis of how the same-sex marriage debate divided African-Americans during Maryland’s ballot initiative campaign in 2012. Through interviews and archival footage, director Yoruba Richen uncovers the “complicated and often combative histories of the African-American and LGBT civil rights movements.” At the core, black Baptist churches, historically the foundation of black family life, relentlessly advocate against gay marriage. As election day nears, must black people of faith choose between being a part of their religious community and embracing true equality?
