India’s emerging queer community is coming face to face with long-held traditions as shown by these two films which won awards at Kashish 2011: The Mumbai International Queer Film Festival. Shortly after her mother dies, filmmaker Sonali Gulati questions her own decision to not come out to her. She begins interviewing LGBT Indians and their parents, uncovering a range of attitudes reflecting the country’s state of flux: a mother who marches in Pride parades; a couple who grapple with their son’s gay union; and another family’s outright hate and violence. Filmed over five years, I AM captures the complexity and vibrancy of family relationships and individual struggles in modern-day India.
