Countless fans know her as Sister Smile or the Singing Nun, but this controversial film based on the life of Jeannine Deckers reveals the tumultuous existence behind her sunny public persona. Unconventional Jeannine (played by the striking Cécile de France) joins the convent, partly to avoid a vexing attraction to her friend Annie. Instead of anonymity, however, she is thrust into international superstardom when her chart-topping 1963 song “Dominique” is used by the Church to rejuvenate its image. But when Sister Smile starts espousing progressive views, she’s cast out and things spiral out of control, until Annie reappears.
