Thirty years after the first diagnosed AIDS cases, how do we mark a time of unimaginable loss? More Americans have been lost to AIDS than in all the nation’s wars since 1900, yet few know about the National AIDS Memorial, a seven-acre sanctuary in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Since the late ’80s, this place of remembrance and healing, known as “The Grove,” has been landscaped and tended by those who lost loved ones to AIDS. But the fight to remember becomes heated when some board members seek broader public recognition through an international design competition, igniting a debate on the appropriateness and meaning of this national memorial.
