When ten-year-old Laure moves with her parents and little sister to a new home and is mistaken for a boy, she takes this opportunity to live as “Michael”—and fits in quite easily. Throughout the summer, Michael discovers new possibilities during inventive and humorous play with neighborhood friend Lisa. Although it’s clear that sock stuffing won’t keep Laure’s secret safe for very long, writer-director Céline Sciamma (WATER LILLIES) treats the audience to an insightful examination of how children interpret gender stereotypes, using convincing, naturalistic performances.
